Celebrating Steve’s leadership and love for community
At Gateways Support Services, we support people with disabilities to live their best lives. This International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), we are celebrating our client Steve, who shows us what leadership and true kindness look like. This year’s theme is “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future.” Steve’s story is a great example of how someone with a disability is a leaders in their community, making the world a better place for everyone.
Steve has been supported by Gateways’ for more than 10 years. He is a friendly and caring person who loves meeting new people, listening to music, and spending time with his fiancé, Sherri. Steve is also very proud of his work selling “The Big Issue” at Market Square in Geelong.
Making a difference with The Big Issue
Steve has been selling “The Big Issue” magazine for 12 and a half years. This job isn’t just about earning money. For Steve, it’s about helping people understand how important kindness is. He wants people to feel cared for and included, even if they don’t buy a magazine. “The Big Issue” gives work and purpose to people who are experiencing homelessness or who live with a disability, and Steve loves being part of that!
Gateways’ Individual Support Workers support Steve with his day-to-day activities. They take him to the recycling centre, help him visit outdoor parks, and go with him to the library to enjoy music. One of his favourite things is having “blokey shifts” with his support worker Julian. They drive on the highway, listen to music, and enjoy time together. Julian has been supporting Steve for more than 10 years, and their relationship is very special.
A love of music
Steve is a huge Pink Floyd fan. His favourite song is “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” and he dreams of being the lead singer in a Pink Floyd cover band one day. Steve also loves going to the “Totally 80s Disco” with Sherri. He often gets up on stage and sings “Whip It” making everyone smile and dance. Music brings Steve so much joy, and he loves sharing it with others.
Steve and Sherri: 32 years together
Steve and Sherri have been partners for 32 years. With the support of Gateways, they go on fun outings together, like trips to Melbourne, live music events, and days out at the park. Steve always makes sure to take good care of Sherri, and their love is a beautiful part of their journey’s together
A leader in kindness and community
Steve’s story shows us how important it is to support people living within a disability seeking opportunities to take the lead within their community. His work with “The Big Issue”, his love for music, and his joyful spirit make him a true leader. “I have great respect for my Gateways workers, Julian, Barb, and Gretta,” Steve says. He appreciates the care and help he receives from his support team.
On this IDPwD, we celebrate Steve and all the people who make our world a better place. Their stories show us that everyone’s voice matters and that we all belong in our community
