Supporting Children with Additional Needs to Transition from Primary to Secondary School

Gaining the Edge Program is designed to provide support and information to parents of and children who have additional needs as they transition from Primary to Secondary School.

The information provided in this program is created by our Adolescent Speech Pathologist and Occupational Therapist.  The primary aim  is to assist families during this big change, making the move to high school as stress free and successful as possible.

Additional Program Aims

  • Bridge the gap between the child’s school transition program and additional support needs
  • Ensure parents are confident that the Secondary School has all the right information for their child
  • Address and provide a safe space for both children and their parents to voice concerns and work towards resolutions about transitioning
  • Assist children and parents in minimising and managing the stress in transition with interventions and strategies
  • Enable parents to liaise with and support each other throughout this difficult time

Program Includes

  • Pre-Program parent consultation with a speech pathologist / OT (1 hour)
  • 4 x 2hr small group training sessions for parents
  • 2 x 2hr sessions to assist during transition for parents and their children
  • Parent evaluation and learning resources
