Celebrating International Day of People with a Disability
Meet David, who participates in our Social Connect program and is one of our many valued volunteers…
David joined our Social Connect program 1 year ago and is a very valued member of our Gateways team.
Thanks to a donation of Honda power equipment from the Honda Foundation and Rex Gorrell Honda, David has been learning new gardening skills. Over the past year, he has put these new skills to use by visiting our Albert Street office once a week to help us maintain and care for the gardens.
David enjoys this role, where he is out and about in the community and also gaining valuable work experience.
Gateways CEO Rosemary Malone says it has been wonderful to have David taking such good care of the garden.
“The aim of our Social Connect program is to help people with a disability to build their independence and social skills and support them to have meaningful jobs in their community.”
“We have a large garden area so it’s not only been a great way for David to use his new skills, but it also helps Gateways. David does a fantastic job and it’s exciting to see the pride and increased confidence he is getting from completing the gardening.”
