Gateways Family Resource Library
Did you know that Gateways has a library at our Geelong West office that is open to families?
The books cover a range of disability topics and conditions including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Down syndrome, ADHD, Epilepsy, as well as language and social skill development. There are also a range of DVDs. Most items are available for parents, carers and family members to borrow for free for up to 2 weeks. So why not pop in and have a look?
To celebrate 2016 Library & Information Week, Carolyn our Gateways Parent Support Worker has chosen her top picks from the Family Resource Library:
- The Complete Guide to Asperger’s Syndrome – Tony Attwood
Tony Attwood has written a comprehensive handbook for anybody affected by Asperger’s Syndrome, be it personally or professionally. Tony Atwood draws on case studies from his extensive clinical experience as a psychologist and provides useful tools and resources.
- The Social Skills Picture Book – Jed Baker
This popular book uses photographs to teach social concepts to children with ASD. Children are then encouraged to role-play situations with an adult or in a group until they are confident to practice them in real life situations.
- It’s Okay to Be Different – Todd Parr
Todd Parr aims this bright and simple book at young readers and brings the message of acceptance and diversity to them. It is a lovely book to share with individuals with ASD, their siblings and possibly their young classmates.
